It’s Fearless Friday! The Fear Of Fighting
On Today’s episode I am going to share with you a couple stories about my personal journey as a kid.
I was bullied a great deal through elementary and junior high school.
I was not physically bullied, but I was teased and tormented a lot.
I did not know how to stand up for myself. More than that I, I was afraid of what a fight might feel like and I didn’t want to feel the pain of a fist in the face.
However, It became inevitable when I was not quite 16 years old.
I finally could not take the relentless teasing and challenges to fighting this other guy that was in town for the summer to work at the ranches.
I finally told his crew to tell him that I will be at the park at 6PM to fight.
I was scared and nervous because typically if a kid wants to fight, he’s done it before. I on the other hand have never thrown a punch to hurt anyone.
Well, my worst fears were realized. He beat me bad! I mean real bad. He was merciless and unrelenting.
Both eyes swollen shut! Cut gums and lips. Bridge of my nose busted.
He even took the boots to my ribs when I was down.
I didn’t have a chance.
The strangest thing was that the punches, kicks and blows looked a lot worse than the actual experience.
Yup, I took a lot of punches.
Now the story does not end there.
A month later I was at a huge outdoor bush party and I was picked on by one of the biggest guys there. Seems word got out I was an easy mark so this guy wanted to make some quick points with his crew.
However, the end result was very different. Listen now to find out.
The whole point of this episode is to express that every boy and young man is going to have challenges thrown at him that are scary and demeaning.
At some point the Universe is going to create a scenario where the fight or flight response gets narrowed down to the first choice…To fight.
I’m not a fan of fighting for the sake of hurting someone. However, I am a strong believer in defending yourself.
Fighting back might be the only way to end an abusive and painful series of events.
Sometimes that’s exactly what it takes to shut down a bully.
There’s something about taking a punch and giving one that shifts a boy’s perceptions of himself.
If you have a fear of fighting, then take it head on and learn some self defence techniques, boxing or martial arts.
You may never have to use it to defend yourself, but it will give you a sense of confidence that perhaps has been missing.
You should never have to go through life afraid.
Remember, only hurt people hurt people.
